I remember the first time I passed by Cheonggyecheon and wondered why there still was the Christmas tree around even though it was in August.
I spent more than two months to figure out that the Christmas-tree-cum-seashell-liked sculpture has nothing to do with Christmas at all. Indeed, the now-president, then-mayor of Seoul, Lee Myung Bak asked for an art contest in order to invigorate the city with sculptures and statues.
Well, that reminds me just about everywhere in Seoul, we can find artwork and sculptures proudly displayed in public places ranging from buildings, streets to parks.
The attempt might somehow enliven the citizen of Seoul regarding that the buildings themselves are pretty much alike and grey due to the rapid economic growth.
The Sculpture Spring at Cheonggyecheon might, in someone's eyes, display a lack of taste and ridiculous. But it is not exaggerated to say that everytime I pass by, I could feel the colorful spirit of the sculpture that makes the monotonous buildings look more lively.
